Why The Monk...
Basically copied from my adoption application because I'm too lazy to write anything new at the moment:
Sorata is one of my favourite CLAMP characters and favourite in X. He is, undoubtedly, the most cheerful out of those entangled in the whole end of the world drama. His positive attitude to everything and good humour was what interested me in him. He just lightens up the otherwise rather depressing series with his so-dry-that-they’re-funny jokes. I really admire his optimism because it shows either a) he accepts his fate. He doesn’t see it as unfair or anything and makes the most of the time he is given because he’s grateful for it. Or b) Sorata is hiding his hurt within joy in an attempt to lighten everyone else’s mood so that they’re not always so stressed about fate. I think it’s more probable that it is a) but then Sorata is not perfect, I’m sure most would agree, so it could be a mixture. Either way though, you gotta love Sorata for his efforts.
Sorata may be quite casual most of the time but there are these beautiful moments when he does show a bit of seriousness and really opens up. I believe Sorata is the one who ‘saved’ Kamui from his moody, full of self-pity attitude that he has at the beginning of the series. Sorata’s smiles are so genuine that it’s hard not to fall for his kindness. I suppose that was what Kamui saw and what drove him to hope. Sorata’s dedication to Arashi really shows his courage, I think. He willingly cared, loved and died for her. I stress willingly because it’s important evidence for Sorata’s courage. When most fall in love, they usually have this denial phase or are afraid of rejection or pain. But Sorata bravely walks into it, not afraid or rejection or pain and with out a single doubt. He was also proud of his love, proud that he could love to not be shy about it or try and hide it. Rather impressive to me. It shows that his love is pure and true.
To sum it up - Sorata is my favourite character in X/1999 because of he is able to live through his painful destiny with a smile. A genuine smile. His honesty, dedication, determination, sense of humour etc. etc. it’s easy to understand why Arashi fell for him.
